Local sailor Jackson MacNaughton placed second at the Butterfly National Championship Regatta, hosted this year by Crystal Lake Yacht Club.
The July 17-18 event hosted some 65 sailors of all ages from around the country to compete in the junior class and open class fleets. The junior fleet includes sailors 16 and under and the open class is for all ages.
In the junior class, trophies were awarded to the top ten sailors and crew. MacNaughton of Lowell along with his crew, Dylan Ruback, of Denver, CO, placed second in the junior division and fifth in the open division. MacNaughton sails for the White Lake junior race team, is a sophomore at Lowell High School and competes throughout the summer in the West Michigan Youth Sailing Association, as well as, racing each weekend at White Lake. He stretches his sailing season in the fall with a newly formed Forest Hills/Lowell team that sails for Grand Rapids Interscholastic Sailing Association Racing Club 420’s and Lasers across the Midwest.
MacNaughton was joined by several teammates from White Lake in the top ten at nationals.
